When rapper and Triple J unearthed artist DyspOra got involved the music and the stories became more contemporary and personal. The notion of ‘home’ for the African diaspora was transferred to modern regional Australia and the challenges faced by young African Australians as they attempt to negotiate two worlds. When Sierra Leonean-Australian composer James Banner Jr joined the team, we were able to create original songs that emotionally connected the journey so many Africans have been on, incorporating the styles of soukous, hi-life, Afrobeat, R n B, rap and blues. All these elements came together to form a coming-of-age musical.
